During
the year 1997, in conjunction with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriffs
Office ongoing commitment to Community Policing and Partnership,
a youth advisory group to the Sheriff was formed. This group applicably named, Youth Advisory Committee, consists
of:
- Two students
from area High Schools recommended by Principal
- School
Superintendents
- Family
Court Judges, and
- Representatives
from P.A.R.A.
Through
round table discussions
our objective is to:
- Develop
a better understanding of the problems young people encounter.
- Improve
the lines of communication between Tuscaloosa County's youth
and law enforcement
Our
goal is to provide enlightening sessions that offer input
and brainstorming
from both youth and law enforcement so that issues may be discussed and opportunities
explored for problem resolution.
Participants are encouraged to submit both issues and topics
of interest as they relate to todays youth, which may be examined
during these summits.
During
previous summits, issues relating to Gangs, School Violence,
Recreational Needs, and other problems have been discussed.
As a result of these summits, the Sheriffs Youth Advisory
Committee was instrumental in the formation and passage of legislation,
dealing with Bomb Threats Against Schools and Domestic
Terrorism.
Communications
with county youths are instrumental to law enforcement in helping
us to gain a better understanding of problems our youth face.
