Meet Chief Deputy Byron Waid

Chief Deputy Byron Waid

A native of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, Chief Waid graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School and later The University of Alabama, with honors, earning a Bachelor’s in Community Studies. In addition, he is a graduate of the FBI National Academy session 262 and Leadership Tuscaloosa. He has served the citizens of Tuscaloosa County as a Law Enforcement Officer for over 31 years.

Chief Waid is a second generation law enforcement officer in Tuscaloosa County. His late father served the citizens of the City of Tuscaloosa from 1961-1986. Like his father, Chief Waid began his career in law enforcement with the City of Tuscaloosa in October of 1985. He resigned that position in October of 1986 to accept a position offered by Sheriff Beasor Walker at the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office as a Detention Officer assigned to the Tuscaloosa County Jail. He was later promoted to Deputy where he was assigned to various divisions within the agency such as Patrol, Highway Drug Interdiction, and Criminal Investigations to include crimes against children.

Chief Waid was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1995 and assigned to the Patrol Division and later Criminal Investigations. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1999, he served in several capacities such as Patrol Shift Commander, Assistant Jail Administrator, and Criminal Investigations Commander. In 2006 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned as Patrol Commander to include Uniformed Services Division and Communications. In 2013 he was promoted to the rank of Chief. In 2015 he was promoted to the rank of Chief Deputy and assigned the responsibility of the Sheriff’s Office daily operations as it pertains to Patrol, Investigations, Civil Process, and Communications.
