Jail Renovation

The existing Metro Jail is undergoing a renovation beginning soon. The old part of the jail will be torn down to make way for a larger facility with a Medical and Psychiatric division. The demolition is tentatively scheduled for January/February 2023. The inmates who are currently housed in Metro will be housed in a temporary modular jail that will be located just across the street from the current facility. Preparations are being made for the delivery of the modular jail now.

We will update this page as the timeline is established further.

June 14 Update:

The temporary inmate housing units are being brought in. Once the utilities are connected inmates can begin occupying the new facility. The old Metro Jail will then be demolished and a new state of the art facility will begin construction.

October Update

The temporary jail is almost complete. We are working hard to ensure that there is no disruption in services as we transition to our temporary facility. Please use caution when driving near the jail. New speed tables are being installed to slow traffic down around pedestrian crossings. Please watch for jail employees crossing the street.

May 2024

The old Metro Jail has been demolished and the construction of the new addition is about to begin. The temporary modular jail is now fully occupied and working well.
